Homework

Homework Philosophy:

One of the KEY tools for successful language learning is consistency.

Our homework philosophy is to:

  1. Maintain consistent exposure to French language
  2. Build and strengthen positive learning strategies and habits
  3. Maximize valuable and authentic learning opportunities
  4. Promote student confidence, motivation, and success!
*Homework will be given on Mondays, and picked up and corrected the following Monday. Each week, students will complete a writing, reading, and question/answer portion*

Défi d’ÉCRITURE

Task:
Students will be given a writing challenge for every second week of homework. The task will be outlined on our website under 'Défis d'écriture' (e.g. You wake up and discover you can fly. What is one thing you would do?! Why?). On their blogger blog (to be created in class), each student will write their response text for the following Monday. Students will also comment on each other’s responses in class, on the day that the homework is due.
Success Criteria:
- 1 post bi-weekly
- originality!
*corrected grammar, spelling, and organisation of ideas are a GREAT IDEA, but not a requirement. Students should focus on expressing their ideas in French, rather than grammatical perfection.

Purpose:To build students’ comfort, confidence, and success with writing in French.
In using French authentically (as a tool for the expression of ideas and opinions and not an entity to be studied explicitly), students are motivated to express themselves and are therefore more engaged in the task. Vocabulary, grammar and syntax will be learned in a meaningful context, and therefore be acquired more lastingly.

Journal de LECTURE

Task:
Students are to read in French at least twice a week in French (20+ minutes each). This will be logged
*Ideally, once the student finds an appropriate book (see criteria), they will stick with it until they are finished- just like they would do in English. Sticking with the same book (i.e. same characters/ topic, one writing style, etc.) will provide a consistent context that will really help with engagement and comprehension
Success Criteria:
- 2+ reading entries/week
- Book is level appropriate
- Subject matter is of interest to the student
- Student uses familiar comprehension strategies
*The goal is not to understand every word, but gain a general understanding of the main ideas (to be able to explain what the text is ‘’about’’.)
Purpose: To build students’ comfort, motivation, and comprehension when reading in French,
- To build vocabulary
- To become familiar with grammatical/syntactic conventions (what ‘’sounds right’’).
- Support improvement in oral production
- To practice and strengthen reading strategies and progress onto more challenging texts
Devoirs de la semaine

Task:
Students will receive a small portion of question/answer homework every second Monday (alternating with the writing challenge), that will focus largely on key grammar concepts (e.g. verb conjugations, translation mistakes etc.). Students will receive the homework on paper, but can access a copy through Workspace if:
  • Student is absent
  • Student loses copy
  • Student prefers to type answers and print to submit
Success Criteria:

-Student completes all questions to the best of their ability
- Student uses appropriate tools, and class knowledge to complete homework
- Student asks for help/clarification BEFORE the date the homework is due/ comes to extra help
Purpose:
To solidify understanding of key concepts by studying them explicitly, to scaffold for success in speaking, writing, reading, and listening.
